Mechanical Superintendent

Opportunity: 

The Pederson Group has been retained by Todd & Sargent to conduct a search for a Mechanical Superintendent to join their team in Winnipeg, MB!

Todd & Sargent is a premier provider of custom design, engineering, and construction solutions to the feed, grain, flour, specialty, and dry-bulk industrial sectors. Our client has more than 90 years of experience providing turnkey facilities, specializing in concrete slipform construction and millwright installation. 

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Mechanical Superintendent will oversee, organize, and direct the scheduling and execution of tasks necessary to complete the projects within a pre-defined budget and timeline. Construction project locations will vary throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia, and Ontario.

Responsibilities:

Safety:

  • Foster a culture where safety is ingrained in all processes while ensuring that company safety policies, procedures, and practices are followed. 

  • Ensure complete compliance with provincial and federal safety regulations. 

  • Identify safety training needs and partner with the safety department to address needs. 

  • Conduct safety training when necessary. 

Project Planning and Scheduling:

  • Oversee, organize, and direct the scheduling and execution of daily tasks to meet a pre-defined budget and timeline for construction. 

  • Maintain regular communication with project and field operations managers to ensure proper staffing, equipment, and materials are available to meet weekly and monthly task goals within the scheduled timeline.

  • Develop and lead the 6-week look ahead plan and lean planning for the project.

Lead Construction Processes:

  • Communicate with site leaders to allocate daily tasks, assess team and task assignments, and oversee daily team performance.

  • Review and manage subcontractors’ safety, scope, timelines, and performance. 

  • Read, interpret, and apply technical information throughout the construction process. 

  • Perform quality control checks on completed work assignments. 

  • Manage equipment, receiving, and installation. 

  • Responsible for all job site logistics, including shipping, receiving, etc.

  • Responsible for effective mobilization and demobilization of the job site. 

Leader of People:

  • Collaborate with the HR department, safety team and the onsite secretary to effectively recruit, hire, and onboard new employees.

  • Foster an environment of collaboration, clear expectations, accountability, idea sharing, and appreciation for a well-done job.

  • Identify, implement and provide new training opportunities for employees while identifying internal employees with potential for leadership growth. 

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a mechanical supervisor role or a similar position. 

  • Certified journeyman millwright or journeyman welder is preferred but not required. 

  • Proficient knowledge of ag-industrial processing equipment and structural/steel erection. 

  • Proficient understanding of workplace safety legislation according to provinces and territories. 

  • Extensive onsite manager experience in large-scale industrial projects, preferably ag-industrial. 

  • Demonstrated understanding of construction methods, schedule and blueprint reading. 

  • Advanced knowledge in construction methods such as excavation, structural steel, millwright, etc. 

  • In-depth understanding of welding symbols and standard mechanical drafting symbols. 

  • Substantial knowledge in concrete forming and finishing, including cold weather concrete. 

  • Proficient with Microsoft Project and demonstrated ability to read, understand, and meet schedule deadlines. 

  • Proven track record of executing basic fabrication operations. 

  • Experience rigging and hoisting using cranes and mechanical and electric winches. 

  • Strong leadership skills are required.
