Director of Projects

Opportunity: 

The Pederson Group has been retained by Cobra Enterprises to conduct a search for a Director of Projects!

Since 2009, Cobra Enterprises has been specializing in innovative, streamlined construction projects, with core services in general contracting, modular building solutions, fabric building solutions, pre-engineered building solutions and mechanical and electrical solutions. From remote projects in northern Canada to larger urban commercial projects, Cobra Enterprises utilizes three divisions—Cobra Mechanical, Cobra Structures, and Cobra Modular—to successfully expedite complex projects for clients.  

Reporting to the President, the Director of Projects is responsible for overseeing all aspects of project management to ensure alignment with company goals. This role includes overseeing negotiations, budgeting and purchasing, collaborating on long-term strategies, as well as ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. 

Responsibilities:

Department Management:

  • Supervise all Project Management Office (PMO) staff.

  • Create and manage the annual budget for optimal departmental operation.

  • Build and maintain relationships with new and existing clients, stakeholders, consultants, suppliers and trades.

  • Strategically plan resources for maximum efficiency and profitability.

  • Report to clients, stakeholders and senior management regarding project progress.

  • Set targets, objectives, and responsibilities for the PMO staff. 

  • Provide leadership and operational oversight, ensuring the department has the tools, resources, and support to succeed.

  • Collaborate with human resources regarding recruitment, hiring, and promotions for PMO staff.  

  • Develop corrective action plans with human resources for team members and terminate personnel as needed.

  • Adhere to the company’s core purpose and values for resources within the department, as well as adherence to work ethics and quality production standards.

  • Coordinate communication between various teams to ensure the appropriate project phases are executed.

  • Oversee contract disputes and monitor the impact of any issues.

Project Management:

  • Oversee the construction process for effective customer relationships, internal efficiencies, project success and company profitability.

  • Delegate the coordination of workload across the PMO staff pertaining to the construction project.

  • Monitoring the budget for projects and ensuring cost control measures are in place.

  • Develop project schedule, budget, and risk mitigation strategies. 

  • Plan, organize, and direct all phases of projects, from pre-construction through handover, while regularly reviewing timing, labour, risk and project plans to ensure work stays on track.

  • Execute project strategy, meeting the required performance, schedule, and profitability targets.

  • Review all project documentation, drawings, specifications, reports, etc.

  • Plan, facilitate, and incorporate actions from strategy sessions, project start-up meetings, lessons learned, and constructability reviews.

  • Mitigate potential cost overruns and provide accurate revenue forecasts.

  • Ensure project health, safety and environmental standards meet or exceed legislated requirements and company policy.

Project Development:

  • Participate and be a key contributor to project development activities to secure projects.

  • Participate in constructability reviews and value engineering strategies.

  • Meet all stakeholder commitments as outlined in the company brand value promise.

Quality Control:

  • Oversee quality control processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and customer expectations.

  • Develop control processes and quality management systems.

Construction Safety:

  • Participate in safety/incident investigations and reviews.

  • Review any onsite-specific requirements needed with the client safety team.

  • Participate and promote the Health and Safety program across all projects.

  • Uphold Cobra’s safety vision and ensure compliance with all safety policies while holding team members accountable for their safety performance.

  • Coordinate project safety efforts utilizing both internal and external resources.

  • Report all incidents immediately to the HSE and ensure the incident reporting policies are followed.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in a managerial or supervisory construction position.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Experience reviewing and coordinating designs, documentation, specifications and schedules.

  • Proficient in Microsoft products, including Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and Project.  

  • Proficient in the following construction software: Bluebeam, AutoCAD and Revit. 

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to interpret structural design drawings and specifications.

  • Capable of multi-tasking to meet simultaneous deadlines and project goals.

  • Proven ability to provide an estimate that is an accurate reflection of reality.

  • Experience reporting progress to management and stakeholders.

  • Strong accountability and dependability in completing assigned tasks.

  • Ability to consistently manage timelines and meet deadlines.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in building and construction are required.

  • Proven ability to lead construction teams and support ideas and solutions independently.

  • Strong business management skills, including negotiation, leadership, and budget management.

  • Travel for off-site meetings and job sites as required.
