Opportunity:

The Pederson Group has partnered with Akman Construction to conduct a search for an Estimator!

Akman Construction has been a family business for over 110 years! Since breaking ground in 1912, their projects have grown to include multi-family residential apartments, commercial, institutional, and post-secondary educational facilities. Akman Construction has a successful legacy of executing high-quality buildings across Manitoba.

Reporting to the Chief Estimator, the Estimator will provide pre-construction services in collaboration with the estimating team.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the estimating team on minor and major complex projects.

  • Conduct detailed analysis of sub-trade quotes received, contract documents and specifications to determine overall project requirements (bonding, insurance, etc.).

  • Complete and oversee project scope of work reviews to ensure completeness of estimates and ensure that all technical specifications, subcontractor scopes, and general condition items have been quantified and accounted for.

  • Identify and develop constructability requirements for orders of magnitude and high-level budgeting.

  • Propose and approve project risk and cost mitigation as well as the potential for project opportunities and cost savings.

  • Review bonding, insurance, and appropriate contingencies.

  • Propose and approve potential bid strategies, constructability requirements, and advantages or innovations to increase bidding success.

  • Provide take-offs and estimates for projects of varying sizes and scopes in the pre-construction phase.

  • Attend consultant meetings and trade walkthroughs while working with qualified trade contractors to establish budgets at the early stages of a project.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Completing an Engineering Technology Diploma (Structural or Architectural) is considered an asset.

  • Completion of an Architectural and Building Tech Diploma, bachelor’s degree, Gold Seal Certification, PQS, LEED, LEAN training, MRICS, and CIQS are also considered assets.

  • Highly proficient in: MS Excel, Building Connected, Onscreen Takeoff, Bluebeam, and BIM modelling is considered an asset.

  • Four to five years of your work experience must be estimating-specific in either a medium-to-large general contractor or a professional quantity surveying organization.

  • Ability to calculate mathematical extensions, read and understand purchase orders, contracts and cost-coding systems is essential.

  • Strong knowledge of fundamental principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity takeoff processes, procurement and bid-closing.

  • Comprehensive understanding and proficiency in design-build and other procurement types is an asset.
